The most iconic brands, like Jeep or Rimowa or Coca-Cola, usually keep one foot in past even as they walk toward the future. On the one hand, they react to changing culture and new technology, but they also stay mindful of the long history that gives them weight and makes their designs recognizable and beloved. For that reason, brands that are iconic but not very old are rare. HAY is one of the very few: the only truly iconic design brand of our generation.
HAY was founded in 2002 by wife and husband team Mette and Rolf Hay in Copenhagen. From its beginning the brand has been a master shape shifter, producing a stream of high-quality design that is surprisingly accessible. And their list of A-list collaborators—Bernhard Willhelm, Doshi Levien, Inga Sempé, Nathalie du Pasquier, the Bouroullec brothers, Stefan Diez and many others—rivals the likes of major design houses that have been around for decades.
According to HAY, their "continued vision is to create straightforward, functional and aesthetic design in cooperation with some of the world’s most talented, curious and courageous designers."
We've long admired HAY and have made great use of their products on our desks, in our studios and in our homes. We're happy to welcome them to the store for the first time this season with an edit of LIFE goods we're sure you'll make great use of, too.
